Paul Scholes is asked about a statue for Eddie Howe after Newcastle’s cup final win, his answer is unexpected

Winning the Carabao Cup means that Eddie Howe is a Newcastle United legend.

The Magpies have had some iconic managers over the years. Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson are Newcastle United legends, while Rafa Benitez was adored at St James’ Park.

However, none of them did what Eddie Howe did on Sunday. Newcastle United beat Liverpool at Wembley, ending their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

Wembley was shaking when Dan Burn scored the opener, while Alexander Isak’s second half strike proved to be decisive.

These players are now immortal on Tyneside, while Eddie Howe has cemented his legacy at St James’ Park.

Paul Scholes laughs at Eddie Howe statue suggestion

However, pundit Paul Scholes has laughed off suggestions that the Newcastle United manager should receive a statue after winning the 2025 Carabao Cup.

The former Manchester United midfielder was asked the question on the Overlap Fan Debate, but did not appear to take it seriously.

“They’ve won the League Cup, f—— hell,” he said laughing.

“Everyone tries to get knocked out of that all year!”

Newcastle United’s incredible route to the final

Based on Scholes’ rather arrogant response, it feels like he does not appreciate the enormity of what Eddie Howe achieved on Sunday.

Before Howe, the last Newcastle United manager to lift a trophy was Joe Harvey in 1969. Howe is the first Newcastle United manager to win a domestic trophy since Doug Livingstone in 1955.

Talk of a statue while Howe is still in the job is premature, but there will likely come a time when the current Toon boss is immortalised in bronze.

It is a remarkable achievement, made all the more impressive by the Magpies’ route to the final.

They beat Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Arsenal on the way to Wembley, all of which are in the Premier League’s top four. Then they beat Liverpool in the final, who are on course to become Premier League champions.

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United certainly did it the hard way.
