Paul Merson wonders whether Newcastle will make Steven Gerrard move, if Magpies survive

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Newcastle United could be ‘knocking down the door’ for Steven Gerrard if the club avoids relegation.

The Magpies are currently in an extremely precarious position.

Just one point now separates the Magpies and Fulham in the Premier League table, and the Cottagers have wind in their sails.

Newcastle are missing Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, and the bust-up between Steve Bruce and Matt Ritchie that became public has made the whole situation even worse.

Bruce still has the support of Mike Ashley, but very few fans believe things will improve with him at the helm.

In the eyes of Merson, Newcastle should be looking at Gerrard, who has just emphatically won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers and has reached the Round of 16 in the Europa League.

He told Sky Sports: “After a brilliant season at Rangers, I just can’t see how clubs won’t be coming after Steven Gerrard.

“I look at teams like Crystal Palace, who are staying up, and Newcastle, if they stay up, and others, will they be knocking the door down for Gerrard?”

Merson went on to brand Gerrard ‘a winner’.

Gerrard would be great for Newcastle, but it’s not likely

A new man wouldn’t have to do much to be an improvement on Bruce, but what Gerrard has been doing at Rangers is truly outstanding.

The Liverpool legend has turned the Gers into a results machine that doesn’t concede goals and scores them in abundance.

He has totally transformed them, placing emphasis on upping his players’ work-rate when he first joined.

If Newcastle somehow survive being relegated, a swoop for Gerrard would be a fantastic move… not that he’d want anything to do with Ashley.

He also has the allure of competing in the Champions League next season, making a departure from Ibrox very slim.
