Paul Merson predicts the result of Newcastle vs Chelsea this weekend

It’s Newcastle vs Chelsea on Saturday in the Magpies’ final game before the World Cup, and Paul Merson predicts the unbeaten run to continue.

Eddie Howe’s side haven’t lost a league game since August, and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 games on Wednesday night.

It was a tight affair at St James’ Park, but Newcastle were able to make it through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup via penalties at Crystal Palace’s expense. Nick Pope was the hero, while Bruno Guimaraes was very nearly the villain.

They are both heading to the World Cup this month, along with Toon teammates Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar. So this will be their last send off before flying to Qatar.

It has been a remarkable first half of this strange season for Newcastle. We are third after 14 games, and guaranteed to remain in the top four heading into the break.

As for Chelsea, their season has been nowhere near as smooth. Replacing Thomas Tuchel with Graham Potter is yet to go to plan, and the Blues will kickoff Saturday’s game down in seventh position.

Next up they have got to face a confident Newcastle side in front of a packed out St James’ Park on a Saturday night. When it rains it pours for Potter, and Merson has had his say on what the result will be on Tyneside.

Merson predicts a draw for Newcastle vs Chelsea

As part of his column for Sportskeeda, Merson has predicted the result of every Premier League fixture this weekend. That includes Newcastle vs Chelsea, and the former England forward expects it to be a 1-1 draw.

“With Chelsea, I think the recent results have caught up with the changes at the club,” he wrote.

“If they lose this match, Liverpool would go past them, and I wouldn’t be shocked if that does happen. Thomas Tuchel never lost consecutive games as Chelsea’s manager in the Premier League. I can’t remember the last time Chelsea lost three league games on the trot, and it could happen this weekend. I do like Graham Potter, and I hope he gets it right.

“Newcastle are absolutely flying at the moment. If they win this game, they will fancy their chances in the top-four race. The name of the game is to beat lesser teams and avoid defeat against the big clubs.

“Newcastle have got to be careful and they need to make sure they don’t get caught up in the occasion. I think this game will end in a draw – I don’t see Chelsea winning, and that’s a big compliment to Newcastle.”

Newcastle to end on a high

Given the momentum Newcastle have right now, it’s a real shame to see domestic football put on hold. But the atmosphere on Saturday night should be electric, as the fans prepare to say goodbye to the players for just over a month.

It’s a big game too – Chelsea are one of the ‘big six’, but that shouldn’t worry Howe. He has proven he can setup his side to succeed against the top teams, with his biggest win coming away to Tottenham last month.

Howe’s side have also gone toe-to-toe with Manchester City, narrowly lost to Liverpool then got a deserved point against Manchester United.

Chelsea is the next test for Newcastle, and Merson can see another three points for the Magpies. However, he’s not confident enough to predict it, and thinks it will be a draw.

Would that be a good result? Given the calibre of opponent, absolutely. The form book would have us down as favourites, but Chelsea is never an easy game.

Newcastle will need to be at their best to get a result against the former European champions. Luckily, we have been for most of this season, and Howe won’t let standards slip for the final game before the World Cup.
