Paul Merson makes Alexander Isak claim as he predicts Ipswich Town vs Newcastle United

Newcastle United appear to have clicked into gear, as they prepare to face Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Magpies have won back-to-back games, responding to the critics with an emphatic 4-0 win over Leicester City. That was followed by Newcastle beating Brentford 3-1, as Eddie Howe’s side advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

This was tipped as a pivotal run of fixtures, and Newcastle United have now won two out of three vital games. The third is away to Ipswich Town in the Premier League, as the Magpies travel to Portman Road.

Joelinton is suspended for Newcastle, but Toon fans will be full of confidence as their side begin to find a bit of consistency.

And that is why Paul Merson thinks Newcastle United will win on Saturday against newly promoted Ipswich Town.

The former Arsenal forward has predicted a Toon victory in his column for Sportskeeda, whilst strangely talking about how good the Gunners would be if they had Alexander Isak in their team…

“It was a brilliant result for Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford,” he said.

“It’s quite amazing they are with these top teams in the last four of that competition. When Newcastle have all their players fit and on the pitch, they are a really good team. So they must focus on it and if they manage to do that, they will end up being a threat to any team in this division.

“I said this about Alexander Isak at the start of the season and I’m not changing it, if Arsenal got him it would have been the icing on the cake. I know Gabriel Jesus scored a hat-trick in the cup game. But Isak is on a different level. He’s a very good player and could have caused massive problems to other teams if Arsenal got him.

“Ipswich managed to pull off an incredible win last weekend against Wolves. They are nicking results here and there and are hanging on in the race to avoid relegation. That’s exactly what they should keep doing as well, but I just think Newcastle will have too much quality for them on Saturday.”

Isak can keep proving Merson right when Newcastle play Ipswich

I am not sure what Alexander Isak being a better striker than Gabriel Jesus or anyone else at Arsenal has to do with Ipswich Town vs Newcastle United.

The media continue to talk about Isak to Arsenal – it is becoming an obsession.

But let them talk. All Newcastle United fans want is to see Isak continue to score goals, on the back of a quiet performance against Brentford.

The 25-year-old barely had a sniff of goal during the Carabao Cup quarter-final, before being replaced by Will Osula. Fortunately for the Magpies, they were able to rely on goals from Sandro Tonali and Fabian Schar.

After failing to find the net or register an assist on Wednesday night, Isak is now on a run of 10 goal contributions in 10 games.

The Sweden international has scored eight goals in all competitions, as he edges closer towards double figures. He will hope to hit that before the end of 2024, with three games to play.

At this stage last season, Isak had nine goals in all competitions.
