Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has had his say on Newcastle’s £25million move for Burnley striker Chris Wood. The Telegraph broke the story on Tuesday that the New Zealand international was heading to Tyneside for a medical.

The Toon Army are in desperate need of a striker, with Callum Wilson injured and Dwight Gayle being the other option. They needed to go out and find a striker who is Premier League proven. Wood certainly fits the bill, hitting double figures consistently for Burnley over the last few years.

Newcastle’s next match against Watford is a massive one, with the Magpies only two points behind The Hornets. A win could be a huge step in the right direction for Eddie Howe’s side.

Paul Merson tipped Chris Wood to be a sensible signing for Newcastle

The importance of bringing in a striker is massive for Newcastle. Merson himself mentioned how Newcastle need a striker in January and they’re about to do so. In his Sky Sports column, he wrote: “It’s make-or-break time for Newcastle; they have to get a centre forward in. They cannot wait.”

Additionally, in the same report, he described the clash against Watford as a “cup final”. Merson also believes that the games against Leeds and Everton will also be very important for Newcastle.

Before reports of the deal emerged, Merson wrote about how good a signing Wood could be for the Magpies.

“He knows what this league is about, and you know he will be alright in this league.

“It’s not going to be a shock to him, and he will run through a brick wall for you. That’s what Newcastle need. They need the likes of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

“They need players who are going to roll their sleeves up and not come in and be shocked how fast the Premier League is.”

Wood looks to be set to make his debut against Watford this weekend, assuming the deal is completed. Not only does this purchase give Newcastle a striker with experience, but it also weakens a relegation rival in the process.

A Premier League proven striker will no doubt provide a lift on Tyneside. With the Magpies taking on Watford this weekend, Wood could get a real boost from the warm reception a St James’ Park.

The arrival of Chris Wood will certainly have some Newcastle fans feeling a lot more confident about where the goals are coming from, that’s for sure.
