An Ayoze Perez hat trick saw Newcastle United secure a 3-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday, but it’s surprisingly Paul Dummett who is getting all the plaudits from Newcastle fans.
The defender was once again the star of Newcastle’s defence as he continues to enjoy life in a centre-back role.
Dummett is still fourth-choice in the Toon’s back line, but recent injury problems have seen him get plenty of game time.
And against Southampton, he once again made a case to become a permanent starter for Rafa Benitez.
In the second half, The Saints were pushing for an equaliser at 2-1, but the Welshman ensured the defence stayed strong.
Despite Newcastle looking under pressure, the defender made numerous key interceptions.
The defender’s standout moment was a clearance from a Nathan Redmond cross, denying Mario Lemina the chance to poke home from six yards.
Although there’s been plenty of praise for Perez, Newcastle fans have made sure to pay Dummett his dues.

As much as Perez will deservedly get the headlines, Paul Dummett deserves a mention. Absolutely fantastic again at the back today! #NUFC

Perez will get the plaudits and rightly so but Dummett has just had one of his best displays in an NUFC shirt. Immense at the back.

Perez. Fair play. Also shout out to Dummett who has had an absolute defensive screamer. #nufc

Dummett. Number of interceptions and clearances he made today was immense. Kept an in-form Redmond and a usually dangerous Danny Ings quiet

MOM for me Dummett

Although Benitez would likely still prefer Florian Lejeune in centre-back, the manager will be pleased with the Welshman’s performance.
It’s bizarre to think he is fourth-choice centre-back at Newcastle, but if his form continues , that won’t be the case for long.
