Paul Dummett has signed a new contract with Newcastle United.

The defender’s current deal was set to expire this summer, meaning he could’ve left the club for absolutely nothing.

But Thursday evening brought news of a new deal, with Dummett signing a one-year extension. He’s staying until 2023.

This may come as a surprise to some given how little he’s played under Eddie Howe. The left-back has only started two games this season.

But Howe has previously spoke about his desire to keep Dummett, who has been an unsung hero for Newcastle over the years.

And as we enter an exciting new era, he’s going nowhere.

Paul Dummett admits next season will be ‘huge’ after signing new contract

After the announcement of his new deal, Dummett reacted on Twitter.

He wrote: “Honoured to commit another year at my boyhood club. Incredibly proud that next season will be my 10th year with the first team, something I could have only dreamt about.

“Next season is going to be huge for the club and city, I’m so excited to be part of it…. Howay the lads.”

It’s incredible how long Dummett has stayed with Newcastle, especially when you remember what Alan Pardew told him all those years ago. The local lad was told he wasn’t good enough to play in the Premier League.

He’s now played more than 100 times in the competition.

Dummett is incredibly reliable, and a player so many managers have turned to. He’s never been flash, but that’s fine. First and foremost, he’s an excellent defender.

Whether at left-back or on the left of a back three, Dummett always gives everything for the Magpies. Keeping him in the squad for at least one more year is a smart decision. He’s a solid player to have in reserve.

And, as he says, it’s set to be a ‘huge’ season at St James’ Park. Newcastle could be on the brink of something special following the change of ownership. It’s no wonder Dummett wants to stay and play whatever part he can in this exciting adventure.
