Newcastle fell to a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon, and although not a particularly surprising result, Toon fans are still furious with the performance of NUFC captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Steve Bruce’s side dared to dream against the Champions League winners in the Premier League clash, taking the lead in the seventh minute through a phenomenal strike from Jetro Willems.

However The Reds soon restored order with Sadio Mane scoring a phenomenal goal of his own in the 28th minute, and bagging a second after capitalising on a Martin Dubravka error just before half time.

Dubravka made amends with a series of stunning saves in the second half, but in the end his efforts weren’t enough to stop Mohamed Salah from sealing victory with a well taken third goal.

Although Lascelles wasn’t majorly at fault for any of these goals, his poor performance did not go unnoticed by Toon fans.

Many criticised his positional play as part of the back three, and his ball playing ability came under particular scrutiny, losing the ball to Mo Salah in the build up to Liverpool’s third goal.

The captain was also extremely lucky to get away with a clear foul on Joel Matip in the penalty area in the first half.

In this new age of VAR, it’s bizarre that it wasn’t given, as Lascelles wrapped his arms round the defender’s neck and pulled him to the ground.

It was a clumsy challenge, and with Newcastle being 1-0 up at the time, a potentially costly error.

The defender is becoming something of a scapegoat when Newcastle lose these days, and he really needs to up his level to avoid the wrath of some fans.

Paul Dummett and Fabian Schar are now undoubtedly the best centre-backs at the club, and those dreams of an England call-up seem to be slowly slipping away.

Hopefully the captain can refind his form, but as it stands, he still looks uncomfortable in a back three.
