Elliot Anderson scored his first Premier League goal against Southampton on Sunday.

It was a long time coming for the former Newcastle United man. He has been electric for Nottingham Forest since joining from Newcastle in the summer.

Anderson had already bagged five assists in the Premier League this season. He will be relieved to get on the scoresheet for the first time.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe did not want to sell Anderson in the summer. The club were forced into player sales due to the lingering pressure of a points deduction for the season.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed much more game time for Forest this season. He may not have got that at Newcastle given how well Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have played in midfield.

Anderson was congratulated by Anthony Gordon on social media following the goal. The Newcastle winger jokingly said, “it’s about time!”

After the goal, Forest fans were heard chanting a song familiar to many Newcastle fans who are bound to wish they kept him at the club.

Nottingham Forest sing Newcastle chant to Elliot Anderson

Anderson has found the net in the Premier League before. Coincidentally, it was against Forest for Newcastle during the 2022/23 season. The goal was chalked off, but Newcastle would still win the game thanks to a late Alexander Isak penalty.

A video on social media showed the Forest fans chanting “du, du, du, Geordie Maradona.” a chant Newcastle fans will be very familiar with.

Toon fans would sing that song to Anderson during his time at Newcastle. It was also a chant Bristol Rovers fans loved to sing when he was on loan there in 2022.

Anderson has received praise from many for his performances this season. Even a Newcastle legend has had his say. Alan Shearer said Anderson has “a class about him.

While Anderson may have left Newcastle, he has still played alongside them this season. Anderson linked up with Lewis Hall for England’s under-21s games against Ukraine and Azerbaijan in October.

Newcastle’s former players shine at new clubs

It was truly a weekend to forget for Newcastle. After losing to Bournemouth, the Magpies slipped down the table because of Manchester City’s win against Ipswich Town.

Like Anderson, former Newcastle man Yankuba Minteh also found the net as he helped Brighton cruise to victory over Manchester United.

Chris Wood also got on the scoresheet for Forest. Wood has had a fantastic season so far, the 33-year-old has now scored 14 goals in 22 Premier League games this season.

Former Newcastle striker Wood recently praised Anderson for hitting the ground running at Forest. The pair have linked up on occasion with Anderson assisting Wood in their 2-1 win against Leicester in October.
