Former Newcastle United winger Nobby Solano has spoken to the Chronicle about the Magpies’ imminent signing of Kieran Trippier.
The 31-year-old is set to become the new owners’ first signing, and Solano has praised the deal – as well as talking about the other type of signings Eddie Howe needs.
Solano played for Newcastle on two separate occasions from 1998-2004 and 2005-2007. He was adored on Tyneside and the feeling was certainly mutual. So if anyone would understand the importance of playing for the Toon Army, it’s Solano.
These days, the self-proclaimed “adopted Geordie” is the assistant manager of the Peruvian national side.

Trippier is the type of player Solano believes Newcastle should sign
Speaking to The Chronicle, Solano gave his take on the type of player the Magpies need to bring in.
He said: “What we need now are players that understand the club and more specifically the situation.”
As for Newcastle’s imminent signing, England international Kieran Trippier, Solano thinks he fits the mould.
“I certainly think Kieran Trippier is one of those and is a great signing.”
During his time at Newcastle, Solano saw plenty of quality players struggle to find their feet at St James’ Park, so understands the importance of signing the right characters.
“It’s no good signing a player who will get eaten alive if things aren’t going well in front of 50,000,” he said.

Solano is ‘proud’ of the way fans have backed Eddie Howe
The Peruvian winger firmly believes that Howe needs time after only being in charge of the club for two months. Furthermore, Solano spoke highly of the fans and their treatment of Howe thus far.
“I am so proud of the fans because they have backed Eddie with good support despite only winning one match.”
In addition, he believes this also applies to the players who put on the Newcastle United shirt.
“Also we need to get behind the players that are already here. The majority of them will be staying.
“Team spirit is important and they have to fight, but the mentality is vital. Players know that they are potentially going to be used, they know they could help the club stay up and then be transfer listed in the summer when others come in.”

Like most fans, Solano is more than pleased with the acquisition of Trippier. His ability and character are just what the Newcastle squad needs going forward if they are to survive.
Furthermore, as a club legend who played in front of the passionate fans at St James’ Park week in and week out, he understands how the backing of the fans lifts the manager and the players.
