Sean Longstaff has started Newcastle’s last seven Premier League games and looks to have re-established himself as a key part of the Magpies side.

With his current contract at the club expiring in June, the 23-year-old will be hoping to impress the new owners and eventual new manager, which could result in a new deal being offered.

Alongside his stunning long-range strike away at Watford, Longstaff has been looking to win the midfield battle for his side in their quest to beat the drop.

Such has been the constant pressure on Newcastle’s goal and leaky defence this season, Longstaff has been busy in the centre of the park, fighting for second balls and breaking up opposition attacks.

Looking at the Premier League stats going into the 10th game of the season, Longstaff is producing some impressive defensive numbers.

No player has attempted more tackles than Longstaff (30) in the Premier League this season (FBref). He currently sits joint top with Brentford’s Christian Norgaard and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell.

Out of those attempted 30 tackles, Longstaff has won 21, which puts him joint third currently in the top-flight alongside Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic.

Ahead of our number 36 is Norgaard and Everton’s Allan who have both won 24 tackles so far this season.

Longstaff also finds himself in the Premier League’s top five when it comes to the number of times he has put an opponent under pressure.

The academy graduate has made 197 pressure this season. Everton’s Allan once again sits at the top of that specific category with 235 pressures.

With a clash against the league leaders Chelsea looming, Longstaff is going to have to be at his best to stop a rampant Thomas Tuchel side, who come into the game off the back of scoring seven in their last league game.
