Newcastle United have released a selection of training pictures ahead of the New Year’s Eve clash with Leeds United, and Callum Wilson is conspicuous by his absence.
The 30-year-old missed the Boxing Day win over Leicester City due to illness, with Chris Wood starting in his place. The New Zealander enjoyed a brilliant game, and scored his third goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Newcastle were fine without Wilson, but it was still hoped that he would be fit for the next game against Leeds. The Magpies face Jesse Marsch’s side on Saturday in their final game of 2022, and will hope to sign off in style.
However, they might have to do it without their number nine.

That is because Wilson has not been spotted in the training pictures posted on the club’s official website. Eddie Howe can be seen putting the group through their paces, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Allan Saint-Maximin taking part.
But there is no Wilson, and there is also no Alexander Isak. Newcastle’s two main strikers have not been seen in training ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture, casting fresh doubt over whether or not they will be involved.
it is no surprise that Isak hasn’t been spotted. Howe recently suggested that we will not see the Swede back in action until 2023. However, it was hoped that Wilson will be fit for the Leeds game.
That now looks less likely, meaning Wood will have to lead the line. That isn’t a problem, as the 31-year-old looked good in the win over Leicester. And he should be feeling confident after finding the net. He has been a streaky player throughout his career, so hopefully he can score again on Saturday against another one of his former sides.
As for Wilson, he may have to settle for place on the bench at best. And if he isn’t fit enough to be named as a substitute then we might not see him until the January 3rd clash with Arsenal.
Given the issues that Wilson and Isak continue to endure, it is a good job that we have the reliable Wood within our ranks. It is no wonder Howe is so keen to keep him at the club.
