Nick Pope shares how Kieran Trippier influenced his move to Newcastle

Nick Pope has officially signed for Newcastle United – and it looks like we can thank Kieran Trippier.

The Magpies confirmed the deal on Thursday evening, announcing that the goalkeeper had signed a four-year deal.

We’ve paid Burnley £10million for Pope, which is a massive bargain considering how good he is.

The 30-year-old becomes the second player to swap Turf Moor for St James’ Park in 2022, following Chris Wood to the North East.

However, Wood isn’t the only current Newcastle player who Pope knows well. In fact, one of the Magpies’ other January signings played a role in bringing Pope to the club.

Kieran Trippier has been telling Nick Pope ‘about everything’

Following his arrival, Pope spoke to the club’s in house media for NUFC TV. He was asked about the players he already knows at St James’ Park, including former Burnley teammates Wood and Jeff Hendrick.

He also knows Trippier and Callum Wilson from England duty, and admitted he’s looking forward to the latter telling him how many goals he’s scored past him when they meet for training.

The new Toon recruit was then asked whether he had spoken to any of them.

“Yeah of course, obviously I spent a couple of weeks with Tripps only last week,” he said.

“So obviously I asked him a few questions, and he was telling me about everything about the lads in the dressing room, atmosphere home and away, the manager and what he’s brought to the club.

“Some things that he really sold to me and he really spoke incredibly highly of everything that’s going on.”

Is there anything Trippier can’t do?!

Defender, goal scorer, set piece extraordinaire, leader, motivator and transfer guru. Kieran Trippier’s talents know no bounds.

It’s excellent to hear the 31-year-old spreading the good word about Newcastle United whilst representing the Three Lions. It sounds like it’s played a role in getting Pope to join the club.

It also highlights how passionate Trippier is about the project at St James’ Park. He isn’t just here for the ride – he’s doing whatever he can to help the club.

We saw that already when he was out injured and continued to attend games, and now he’s influencing Howe’s summer spending.

Pope becomes the second player Trippier has helped join Newcastle. The first was Wood, after Trippier’s agency made the Magpies aware of the striker’s release clause.

Howe will be delight that Trippier had a word with Pope, as he’s now got the goalkeeper he’s been after all summer.
