Newcastle are reportedly lining up a loan deal for Burnley’s centre-back Ben Gibson, according to TEAMtalk website, and if true, it is a potential deal that makes no sense whatsoever.
The former Middlesbrough defender could be available, as he has not played a single minute of Premier League action for Sean Dyche’s side this season, and managed a solitary game in their EFL Cup defeat to Sunderland.
Quite why Newcastle would be in the market for a centre-back at all is baffling, let alone one who cannot force his way into the Burnley starting lineup.
It is not the first time Gibson has been linked with a move to Tyneside by the website, with them reporting a similar potential deal in the summer, shortly after Steve Bruce’s appointment.
In fact, their article from July contains many similarities to their latest claim, and hopefully, it will be just as inaccurate.
Any centre-back link will lead to fears over Fabian Schar’s future
Any speculation around the signing of a centre-back immediately throws up concerns over the future of this season’s star player Fabian Schar.
The Swiss international has been outstanding, and it would be no surprise to hear of interest in him from other Premier League or European sides.
But even if the worst were to happen, and Schar was sold – which is still highly unlikely – surely Newcastle would be looking at a higher quality replacement than Gibson?
As it stands, central defence is one of, if not the, only areas of the Newcastle squad with excellent quality in depth.
That is precisely why any links to a player like Gibson, whether for a potential loandeal, or permanent, should be taken with a very big pinch of salt.
