Newcastle’s January target Divock Origi reportedly ‘certain’ to leave Liverpool

Divock Origi was one of a plethora of players linked with Newcastle United during the January transfer window.

But while the likes of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood made the move to the North East, Origi remained with Liverpool.

Despite plenty of interest from all over Europe, Jurgen Klopp retained the services of the Belgian striker, who is a cult hero at Anfield.

Origi has scored many a famous goal for the Reds. He scored twice in the shocking Champions League comeback versus Barcelona, then he found the net in the final win over Spurs.

But despite his legendary status, he remains on the fringes of Klopp’s side. That’s why he’s linked with an exit pretty much every time the transfer window swings open.

January was no different, and plenty of outlets linked Newcastle with a move for the 26-year-old as they looked to add attacking reinforcements.

Newcastle wanted Divock Origi, and could land him for nothing this summer

In November last year, the Northern Echo reported that Origi was a loan option for the Magpies, and that Amanda Staveley believed that he would be open to the move.

When the transfer window eventually opened, the Telegraph claimed that the Belgium international was one of four attacking targets on Newcastle’s radar. In the end, PIF brought in Chris Wood for £25million.

Origi stayed with Liverpool, but he might not be there for much longer.

That’s because the Daily Mail state that he is ‘certain’ to leave Anfield this summer. The forward’s contract is set to expire.

If Newcastle decide to reignite their interest in Origi, they could land him for absolutely nothing. Even with our newfound wealth, the new owners will be looking for value for money.

But will we go for Origi again? Or will we set our sights higher?

Callum Wilson is a fantastic striker, but his fitness woes are there for all to see. Meanwhile, despite his hard work and endeavour, Wood feels like a short-term solution for the Magpies.

If Newcastle are going to target a striker in the summer, it will surely be a younger option with the potential to lead the line for years to come. Origi doesn’t feel like that kind of player.
