Newcastle United’s top four rivals Tottenham Hotspur are now set to be without Rodrigo Bentancur for the rest of the season due to injury.
The midfielder was forced off during Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester City after scoring Spurs’ only goal of the game.
It was a miserable afternoon for Antonio Conte’s side, who were torn apart by a James Maddison inspired Foxes team.
A win would have allowed them to jump above Newcastle and into the top four, but they failed to do so. Instead, the Magpies extended the gap between the sides to two points after drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth.
It was a shocking result for Tottenham, and now the game is going to have further implications.

Rodrigo Bentancur now out with an injury for the rest of the season
Tottenham have confirmed that the 25-year-old is going to miss the rest of the season. They have stated that he ‘ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee’ in the defeat to Leicester.
That is a huge blow for Conte. Bentancur is one of his key players and has a brilliant partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Now the Dane will have to play without Bentancur, which is a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of jumping above Newcastle and into the top four.
It comes after Spurs also suffered a blow in between the sticks. Hugo Lloris could be out for the next two months, while they have picked up another problem in midfield too. Yves Bissouma is on the sidelines and is set to undergo ankle surgery.
Newcastle will not be showing any delight in seeing Tottenham players get injured, but it could have a big impact in the race to qualify for the Champions League. Conte’s side is depleted right now, and he is going to be without key players for a long time.
It is up to Eddie Howe’s side to capitalise, although we may have our own midfield problem to worry about. Joe Willock limped off against Bournemouth, with Howe believing it is a hamstring issue for the 23-year-old. That is a major concern with the Carabao Cup final looming.
