Newcastle will now make ‘commercially driven’ decision this summer amid PSR fears

Newcastle United officials are doing all they can to increase their revenue, and that could bleed into their pre-season plans.

The Magpies have just announced some post-season arrangements, with Eddie Howe and his players heading to Australia immediately after the climax of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Newcastle are going down under, and will face Tottenham Hotspur and the A-League All Stars in a couple of friendlies.

It seems like a mad decision immediately after the end of the season, but it is proof of the club’s need to raise funds. Profit and sustainability rules are holding Newcastle back, and the owners know that they need to bring more money into the club.

They can do that by selling big players like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, but that is far from ideal. Instead, Newcastle would rather look at other ways to raise funds, and that is why their pre-season plans will reportedly be ‘commercially driven’.

Newcastle could go back to USA this summer for pre-season

That is according to the Shields Gazette, who report that Newcastle United are debating going back to the USA this summer, just like they did last year.

The Magpies were part of the Premier League Summer Series, playing in high profile games in Atlanta, Philadelphia and New Jersey. It was a lot of travelling, but a great financial opportunity for the club to increase its visibility over there.

And that is why they could go back ahead of the 2024/25 season. The Shields Gazette add that Toon sources have told them that any decision made regarding pre-season will be ‘commercially driven’.

It is interesting that commercial reasons will seemingly take precedent over football reasons. That shows how important it is to increase the club’s revenue, as Premier League sides travel all over the world during the off season.

In an ideal world, Eddie Howe would probably not take his team as far away. The warm weather is great, but the travel and media commitments must be gruelling.

However, the need to grow commercially is clear, and that is why mega trips like this to the other side of the world are not going to go away.
