While the Newcastle United takeover is on hold, the Magpies’ Premier League rivals West Ham have interest of their own.
However, their takeover tale hasn’t been going on long enough to be branded a ‘saga’ just yet.
According to the Daily Mail, a consortium offered £400million to buy the Hammers. However, the bid was rejected.
The bid is being fronted by former QPR chief executive Philip Beard.
Since that report, the West Ham owners have spoken out against the potential buyers.
David Sullivan told BBC Sport: “The offer was derisory.
“They never produced any proof of funds and were looking to raise funds to do the deal.”
The consortium have since hit back, claiming they did provide proof of funds.
However, David Gold and Sullivan reportedly have no intention of selling West Ham.
What does the West Ham takeover attempt have to do with Newcastle?
As for Newcastle, their takeover is nowhere near. That’s despite the fact Mike Ashley agreed a deal to sell the club last summer.
The deal wasn’t approved by the Premier League, and now the Toon owner has two ongoing legal battles that he hopes will resurrect the deal.
Sadly, these legal battles won’t take place for a while.
Arbitration has been delayed until early 2022, while jurisdiction for the CAT case is set to take place on September 27th 2021.
However, Ashley remains committed to selling to PCP Capital Partners.
But is his commitment costing us another potential sale?
If this consortium can offer £400million for West Ham then they can afford Newcastle. Ashley agreed to sell the club for around £300million last year.
While the West Ham consortium probably have no interest in Newcastle, they are proof that there are other possible buyers out there who have the money required to buy NUFC.
For the moment, Ashley is going nowhere. He still wants to sell to Amanda Staveley, but isn’t allowed to.
How long will the buyers wait? Ashley is reportedly confident that PCP will hang around, but there are no guarantees.
Newcastle United needs a new owner. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Staveley.
