The Geordie Boot Boys team has made their predictions about how they think Newcastle United’s 24/45 campaign will all unfold.
The 24/25 season is set to be a big one for Newcastle United. Eddie Howe is set to enter his third full season as Toon boss, having enjoyed a hugely successful few years at St James’ Park.
The Magpies have made a number of acquisitions so far this summer, with the likes of Lloyd Kelly and William Osula set to strengthen what was previously a pretty thin squad.
Ultimately though it is Newcastle’s existing players that have fans so optimistic ahead of the new season. Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have both remained in the north east despite fears they could leave, while fan favourite Bruno Guimaraes looks set to lead the Magpies to glory.
So with that being said, the Geordie Boot Boys authors thought it was worth drafting up our predictions ahead of the new season.
Where will Newcastle United finish in the Premier League?
Mitch Tapner: 4th place
“I think Newcastle are in for a very exciting season. I predict the Magpies will finish fourth ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United, who I believe will both struggle at times this season.
“Eddie Howe’s side have been impressive during pre-season, particularly against Girona. I was lucky enough to attend that game and was shocked at how sharp and cutthroat Newcastle looked.
“Having no European football is also a big plus, Newcastle having struggled so much last season with the extra games and travelling.”
James Rutherford: 5th place
“I would love to say Newcastle are going to finish in the top four again like they did in the 2022/23 season, but the competition is just so intense.
“But I do think the Magpies will get back into Europe, which is massively important after missing out last year.
“It is a shame we have no European football, but it could be to our advantage. And even without many new signings, Eddie Howe has got a really talented squad that is capable of something very special.”
Who will be Newcastle’s top scorer?
Mitch Tapner: Alexander Isak
“There is only one answer when it comes to this question. Isak showed everyone last season he is one of the best number nine’s in the world and I think he will carry on that electric form this upcoming campaign.
“I believe Anthony Gordon will be a close second to the Swede. I expect him to build on his tally of last season and notch 15 league goals this time around.”
James Rutherford: Alexander Isak
“It would be foolish to pick anyone other than Isak. Unless he has fitness issues like he has had in the past, he should easily be Newcastle’s top scorer this season.
“He looks like he could take his game to an even higher level based on pre-season, which is very exciting. Isak may even be a contender to be the top scorer in the entire Premier League – not just at Newcastle.”
Who will be Newcastle’s ‘breakout’ player?
Mitch Tapner: Lewis Hall
“Having struggled early on his Toon career, I think Hall will soon transform into the player everyone expects him to be.”
“He impressed at the end of last campaign and has carried that form into pre-season, being one of Newcastle’s brightest players this summer. I expect a lot from him this upcoming season.”
James Rutherford: Harvey Barnes
“Last season was a bit of a mixed bag for Harvey Barnes. He scored some important goals when he was fit, but missed a large chunk of the season with a foot injury. He also went into the campaign without a proper pre-season under his belt.
“But Barnes has been a key figure in Newcastle’s pre-season preparations, and looks very sharp. His finishing ability is sensational, and he will hope to hit double figures from the left flank. Barnes’ big issue will be starting consistently, as he is competing with Anthony Gordon for a place in the starting XI.”
Who is the Newcastle United player you’re most excited to watch?
Mitch Tapner: Sandro Tonali
“I don’t think I am the only football fan who is hugely intrigued to see how Tonali gets on its year.
“The Italian looked really bright before his suspension, particularly in Newcastle’s 5-1 win over Aston Villa on the opening day.
“I think Tonali will play a huge part in the Toon’s success this season.”
James Rutherford: Joelinton
“I will go with someone different to Sandro Tonali, although he is the obvious answer.
“There are plenty of other contenders. Gordon is so exciting and will be keen to build on what he achieved last season, while Bruno Guimaraes is mesmeric in the middle of the park.
“But I’m going to pick Joelinton, simply because he was such a big miss last year. His presence in midfield should make us much more physical, which was an issue at times during the 2023/24 season.”
