A run of inconsistent results and poor performances has called Eddie Howe’s position as Newcastle United manager into question. But, should he really be worried?

Ahead of the Burnley game on Tuesday night, it is safe to say December has been a month to forget for Newcastle.

If Newcastle United don’t beat Burnley, where would you stand on Eddie Howe’s future?

We’ve seen the Magpies lose the Tyne-Wear derby, drop points against Spurs, Leverkusen, and Chelsea, and register just one win in the Premier League — against Burnley, ironically.

Given this, it’s not surprising that the murmurs around Eddie Howe’s future have grown into genuine discussions as to whether he’s the right man for the job. But, whether PIF would replace Howe or not is another matter entirely.

Eddie Howe is not at risk of losing his job

According to a fresh report from The i Paper, it is said there have been internal discussions around a number of key issues that are concerning everyone at Newcastle.

Those problems include getting the style of play right, a failure to effectively navigate set-pieces at both ends, the manner in which the team sets up for away games, and the mistakes Newcastle made in recruitment over the summer.

While all of that is coming under question behind the scenes, one thing has been made abundantly clear: Eddie Howe will remain as Newcastle United manager for the foreseeable.

In fact, there’s absolutely no way PIF are ready to part ways with their man and he is expected to get their full backing in January and beyond.

As one insider put it, Howe has “earned our total trust and confidence because he deserves it.”

Would Unai Emery have won a trophy as quickly as Eddie Howe if Newcastle appointed him in 2021 instead?

Don't forget, he was PIF's first choice!

2026 can still be a very bright year for Newcastle United

Granted, results and performances have been pretty uninspiring of late. But, it is worth remembering that Howe and Newcastle are dealing with a bad injury crisis that has taken out a number of key players from the preferred starting XI, including three of the core back five (Nick Pope, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn).

With those players back and with acquisitions expected in January, there’s every reason to remain hopeful that Howe can turn things around very soon.

Let’s not forget Newcastle are into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, have a great chance of progressing in the Champions League, and are still only six points off the top five in the league.

There’s no reason to throw in the towel just yet. We could well see another trophy paraded around Tyneside and more Champions League football for Newcastle, which would turn Howe into a bona fide Magpies legend.
