Newcastle United have just set an all-time club record last night

Eddie Howe’s well-drilled Newcastle United will now set a new club record this season regardless of the outcome of the next two games.

After their resounding victory last night, even if Newcastle lose their next two Premier League games they will set a new record.

Newcastle have Leicester at home on Monday night followed by a final-day trip to the Big Smoke to take on Chelsea. The Magpies need just three points from those games to secure Champions League football without any help from anyone else, but could have qualification in the bag if Aston Villa beat in-form Liverpool on Saturday.

Newcastle will finish the season with the fewest top flight defeats in their history

That would mean that even if Newcastle went on to lose the games against Leicester and Chelsea they would still be hearing that famous anthem at St James’ Park next season.

On top of that, however, even if the Magpies lost both of those games they would still finish the season with a new record of the fewest defeats in a top-flight season in their entire history.

As it stands Eddie Howe‘s men have only suffered five defeats this season, and even if we end the season on seven defeats that’s still our lowest in the top flight in our 131 year history. Newcastle fan Si Blood posted the stat on Twitter after trawling through the history books.

Whatever happens now, this season has been way beyond what we could have dreamt at the start of the season. The general consensus amongst fans in August being that they’d be happy with a decent top-half finish and a cup run, and they’d be ecstatic if we snook into a European spot.
