Newcastle United fans demand club re-sign former player now, it ‘has to happen’

Newcastle United fans on social media are eager to see the club re-sign Elliot Anderson.

Anderson made his England debut on Saturday during an otherwise uneventful 2-0 win over Andorra at Villa Park.

It was not a vintage England performance by any means but it was nice to see the former Newcastle United youngster make his debut on the international stage.

Newcastle didn’t want to sell Anderson to Nottingham Forest but were forced to because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR)

While Anderson admits he had to leave Newcastle as he looked for more first-team football, it’s still very painful to watch an academy graduate flourish elsewhere.

Having watched him star for England, Toon fans on social media were eager to see him brought back to St James’ Park in the future.

Newcastle United fans demand Elliot Anderson deal

Supporters took to social media platform X to call on the club to try to bring Anderson back to his boyhood club in a future transfer window.

“I’m hoping he will run his contract down and return home,” said another fan.

One fan added: “Has to happen.”

“Hope there’s a buy back clause,” said another.

Anderson left Newcastle for around £35million and still has four years to run on his contract at the City Ground.

Eddie Howe has already sent a worrying Elliot Anderson warning

Eddie Howe did not want to sell Anderson but, at the time, letting the midfielder go was more palatable than selling one of Newcastle’s truly elite stars.

Given his status as a Newcastle academy graduate, the club banked every penny of the money they received for him as ‘pure profit’. However, Newcastle repaid a vast majority of the fee by buying Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Sadly for the Magpies, Howe has already warned that Newcastle will have to sell more players like Anderson in the years to come.

Indeed, PSR actually rewards teams for selling their academy products.

The Newcastle United manager has previously said: “So I think that one is a very unusual one because I think that will be happening again, not just here, but at other football clubs, when you sell footballers for financial reasons.”
