Why Newcastle United will be happy Donny van de Beek said no to Toon move

Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Donny van de Beek on loan during the January transfer window.

The Telegraph reported midway through last month that the Magpies had made a move for the Manchester United midfielder.

However, he said no because of Newcastle’s perilous Premier League position.

Van de Beek did manage to secure a January move away from Old Trafford, joining Frank Lampard at Everton on transfer deadline day. He’ll spend the rest of the season on loan at Goodison Park.

Toon fans could see the Dutchman firsthand on Tuesday night, with Newcastle facing the Toffees at St James’ Park.

While the 24-year-old might relish the chance to show the Newcastle faithful what they could’ve won had they been higher up the league, Toon attentions will be on another player.

Bruno Guimaraes might not have joined Newcastle if Van de Beek said yes

On January 30th, Newcastle United signed Bruno Guimaraes. They landed the marquee midfielder they craved, arriving for a potential club record fee of £42million. He’ll hope to make his debut on Tuesday night.

But perhaps the deal for the Brazilian wouldn’t have been possible if Newcastle had managed to land Van de Beek. Would Newcastle really have gone for another centre midfielder if VDB had joined the club?

And while the Netherlands international is a talented player, the Magpies should be happy that they have Guimaraes instead.

The Magpies’ number 39 is a more ‘complete’ midfielder compared to Van de Beek. He can help improve the transition from defence to attack, an area where we have really struggled in recent years.

And he’s also a permanent Toon player. No matter how well Van de Beek does for Everton, he’s going back to Man United in the summer. And with a new Red Devils boss on the horizon, he might fancy his chances of a renaissance in red.

Whereas Guimaraes is with Newcastle for the long haul.

Missing out on Van de Beek felt like a blow at the time, but we should be grateful. If it hadn’t happened, perhaps Guimaraes wouldn’t be a Newcastle United player right now.
