Newcastle United could soon be on Netflix in £4.4bn deal

Newcastle United have been the stars of Amazon Prime, and now a Netflix debut could be on the horizon.

During the first full season after the PIF takeover, cameras went behind the scenes at Newcastle United. Fans got a behind the scenes look as Eddie Howe’s side reached the Carabao Cup final and qualified for the Champions League.

The documentary was done to get more eyes on the club and increase revenue, and now the Magpies could be coming to another streaming service.

However, Newcastle United possibly appearing on Netflix will depend on how they perform on the pitch, rather than for a fly on the wall documentary.

Netflix could bid for Champions League

For the second time during Eddie Howe’s reign as Newcastle United manager, the Magpies are in the Champions League.

Toon fans in the UK who are unable to attend the European games will be watching the club on TNT Sports, but there is a chance that the Champions League could be broadcast on Netflix in the future.

According to the Times, Netflix are expected to make a bid to present one Champions League game per round, like Amazon Prime do currently.

UEFA are set to change the way they sell the broadcast rights to their games from the 2027/28 season, with new deals potentially worth up to £4.4billion in total.

That could see Newcastle United earn even more money in the future, providing they can continue to qualify for the Champions League.

Newcastle United mocked Sunderland for Netflix documentary

While Newcastle have made a documentary on Amazon Prime, rivals Sunderland were once stars on Netflix.

The series ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’ ran for three seasons on Netflix, inadvertently showcasing their demise in recent years. The documentary coincided with a dark time for the Black Cats, as they dropped into League One.

Since the series was broadcast on the streaming service, Newcastle United fans have poked fun at their rivals. There were chants of ‘we saw you crying on Netflix’ when the two sides met in the FA Cup at the Stadium of Light in January 2024.

Toon supporters will have the chance to sing it again very soon, with the Tyne-Wear derby set to return following Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League. They will face each other at the Stadium of Light in December, with the return fixture at St James’ Park scheduled for March 2026.
