Newcastle United only have a few more contract situations to sort out before the end of the season.

It has been announced that Fabian Schar has signed a new deal, with the defender committed to Newcastle United until the end of next season.

The Magpies have also given new deals to Emil Krafth and Martin Dubravka, while Jamaal Lascelles’ Newcastle deal runs until 2026. The same goes for Sean Longstaff, with Newcastle triggering an option to extend his contract by 12 months.

That leaves just four senior players whose Toon futures remain uncertain: Callum Wilson, Mark Gillespie, John Ruddy and Jamal Lewis.

Out of those four players, Callum Wilson is the only one who has played a senior game for the Magpies this season. However, he currently feels likely to leave St James’ Park.

As for Mark Gillespie, his Toon career could be set to continue.

According to the Chronicle, there are ‘suggestions’ that Gillespie could be handed a one-year contract extension to continue being part of Eddie Howe’s squad.

The 33-year-old has not featured for the Magpies all season. His last competitive appearance for Newcastle United was in September 2020 when Steve Bruce was manager.

Eddie Howe massively values Mark Gillespie

Despite not playing a competitive minute under Eddie Howe, the current Newcastle United manager remains a huge admirer of Gillespie.

The 2024/25 campaign is his fifth season as a Newcastle United player, and Howe values Gillespie’s importance behind the scenes and on the training ground.

The Toon boss spoke incredibly highly of Gillespie at the end of last season, after the Geordie stopper had competed in a post-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur over in Australia.

The Magpies won that game on penalties, with Gillespie proving to be the hero in a game with zero importance.

After the game, Howe showered Gillespie with praise.

“The work this guy has put in this season has been incredible,” he said.

“Too often we talk about the players that are always playing, but never enough about the players that aren’t playing but contribute so much. Mark is one of those. His attitude to training is ridiculous everyday.

“You’re on the end of a lot of shots, aren’t you? Day in and day out. He’s always there for the players to help them get better and you need a goalkeeper that is going to be there and train every day and be as consistent as Mark is.

“Those experiences for Mark – I’m so pleased for him, because of what he gives every day. There are a lot of players like Mark within the squad that characterise our success. I just wanted to say that to Mark and share that moment with him.”
