Newcastle United target William Saliba is staying at Arsenal.
The French defender was linked with a move to the Magpies last week, with his loan spell with Marseille coming to an end.
L’Equipe reported that Newcastle asked about signing Saliba, who is one of Europe’s most promising defenders.
That’s why Arsenal splashed out £27million on him in 2019, and it’s probably why Steve Bruce wanted him last summer.
Saliba was linked with a loan move to St James’ Park, as Bruce looked to boost his defensive ranks. However, he would join Marseille instead.
The 21-year-old has had a wonderful time in Ligue 1, being named in the team of the season and winning the Young Player of the Year award.
His form has led to Newcastle being linked again, but the centre-back is going nowhere.
Saliba outlines his intentions to stay at Arsenal
Saliba has spoken to Telefoot about his future, and confirmed his desire to play for Mikel Arteta’s side.
“I belong to Arsenal, I still have two years left,” he said.
“I will be back with Arsenal. I have played zero matches and I still want to show them my true face and have the chance to play for these fans and this great club.
“It doesn’t just depend on me. In any case, to leave like this, would be a shame.”
No surprise for Newcastle – they can look elsewhere
That puts talk of a move to Newcastle to bed.
It’s disappointing as Saliba is an exciting prospect who could have been a long-term player for the Magpies. However, a move never felt likely at all.
He was brought to Arsenal for big money three years ago, and they will surely want to see what he can do in the Premier League. In return, Saliba will feel he has a point to prove that he belongs at the Emirates.
Newcastle will be playing against Saliba instead of with him next season, but that’s alright.
Eddie Howe will instead have to look elsewhere for a new centre-back, and there are plenty of other options. The frontrunner appears to be Sven Botman, who Newcastle are in for once again.
Nathan Ake is another alternative, but he could reportedly cost a club record fee of £50million.
