Newcastle United are interested in signing James Maddison in the future, but could face competition from Tottenham.
The Leicester midfielder was linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium this summer, with the Magpies making multiple bids for him. However, they were turned down and Maddison remained a Leicester player.
But while the transfer window is now closed, the rumours are continuing. According to the Northern Echo, Maddison is Newcastle’s number one January target.
Eddie Howe will fancy his chances when 2023 arrives, especially if Leicester continue to struggle. They are currently bottom of the Premier League and without a win from their opening seven games.
But as Leicester struggle, Maddison continues to shine. The England international has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, despite being snubbed on the international stage by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.
Maddison was brilliant at the weekend, scoring in Leicester’s 6-2 defeat to Tottenham. He impressed with his performance, and Newcastle might not be the only side who are keeping an eye on the 25-year-old.
Tottenham interested in Maddison as well as Newcastle
According to Dean Jones from Give Me Sport, Newcastle might face competition from Tottenham to sign Maddison.
“He’s a great player and he will have a decision to make over his future at the end of this season, I think,” he said.
“Tottenham do like him but they were not given any encouragement that he would be available for anyone to buy, so it was felt they had enough to get by for now.”

Give Me Sport add that Spurs considered a summer move, and could test Leicester’s resolve in the future.
Incentive to get a deal done in January for Newcastle
With Tottenham admiring Maddison too, Newcastle face serious competition for his signature. And if it’s a straight battle between those two clubs, it’s difficult to see the Magpies coming out on top.
Tottenham can currently offer Champions League football. They’ve also started the new season brilliantly, and could possibly challenge for the Premier League title.
In contrast, Newcastle are mid-table. But they are certainly doing better than Maddison’s current employers Leicester.
Give Me Sport’s report implies that Maddison could be a target for Tottenham next summer, meaning January might represent an opening for Newcastle to get a deal done. And he would certainly be a statement signing midway through the season.
Howe’s side are lacking creativity in midfield, and Maddison, who joined the Foxes in 2018 for £20million, ticks a lot of boxes. He can play centrally or out wide, and provides goals and assists. That’s exactly what Newcastle are missing right now.
Given Maddison’s ability, it’s no surprise that a club the size of Tottenham are fans of him. And it shows how big a coup it would be if Newcastle can sign him in 2023.
