Newcastle transfer news: Patrick Bamford is an option if Leeds go down

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Patrick Bamford if Leeds go down.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state the striker is an option for the Magpies. However, it may depend on whether Leeds remain in the top flight or not.

Jesse Marsch’s side are on the brink, and will be fighting for survival on the final day. They’re currently in 17th place, and will be watching on nervously when Everton and Burnley play Palace and Villa respectively tonight.

It’s been a really poor season for Leeds, who have been massively hindered by injuries. And a player they’ve massively missed is Bamford.

The 28-year-old has played just nine league games this season, scoring twice. That’s a far cry from last season, when Bamford was one of the most lethal forwards in the top flight.

Bamford was brilliant for Leeds last season

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were propelled to safety by the goals of Bamford last season.

He was the main man in the Premier League for the first time in his career, and scored a remarkable 17 goals. It was the joint best tally of his career.

His performances earned him an England callup, while he also received big praise from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

“Top player, Bamford,” Klopp said in April 2021.

“I can remember before the season I heard on talkSPORT that people said, ‘Leeds need a proper goalscorer, Bamford is not good enough’.

“I’m so happy that he could prove them wrong, he’s an exceptional player, perfect.

“The work rate is outstanding and still playing the football he plays on top of that and scoring goals, that’s rare.”

Injury record has to be a worry for Newcastle

While Bamford proved last season how good he can be in the Premier League, his 2021/22 campaign is massive cause for concern.

To only play nine times is hugely worrying. He just hasn’t been able to get fit, and that’s one of the main reasons why Leeds are on the brink of relegation.

It would be a huge risk to bring him to St James’ Park given what’s gone on this season. He’s played fewer times than Callum Wilson, who’s had his own issues in 2022.

Newcastle need someone they can rely on. Wilson’s injury record is a big worry for the Toon, and we need someone else we can turn to. Ideally, we need a young striker who can thrive at St James’ Park for years to come.

Bamford isn’t that player – he turns 29 in September, so he’s not even that much younger than 30-year-old Wilson.

Given Bamford’s problems this season and his age, he doesn’t feel like the right type of player for Newcastle.
