Newcastle transfer news: Toon contacted about Kalimuendo amid Leeds uncertainty

Newcastle United might not have missed out on Arnaud Kalimuendo to Leeds after all.

The forward has been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer, and it was even claimed that Newcastle had made a £17million bid.

However, all signs seemed to point to him joining Jesse Marsch at Elland Road. They also offered £17million, and it was then claimed that they were close to a £21million agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.

That was last week, but Kalimuendo appears to be no closer to joining Leeds.

90min have provided an update on the situation, and claim that Kalimuendo’s move to Leeds has been put on hold by PSG.

They state that it is because the 20-year-old has impressed Christophe Galtier in pre-season. The new PSG boss now wants more time to watch the striker before deciding on his future.

90min add that a group of Premier League clubs have also been contacted about possibly signing Kalimuendo. And one of those clubs is Newcastle.

The other teams named are Everton, Crystal Palace and Brighton. The fact Newcastle have been contacted as a possible suitor is interesting, as we have been linked and need a player like him.

Ekitike to PSG could help Newcastle

While Galtier might be impressed with Kalimuendo, it’s still difficult to see how he will get games at PSG. They already have a forward line consisting of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

On top of that, they also signed Hugo Ekitike ahead of Newcastle. Not landing him has really scuppered our transfer plans, but it could also lead us to someone else.

Surely PSG can’t give Ekitike and Kalimuendo the minutes they need. And surely the new signing is going to take preference.

With that in mind, Kalimuendo still feels certain to leave PSG, even if Galtier is impressed.

That means Newcastle might still have an opportunity to land the youngster. He certainly fits the bill of what we’re looking for.

However, 90min add that Leeds are still hopeful they will sign him. And how genuine Newcastle’s interest is remains to be seen given the lack of speculation surrounding him possibly moving to Tyneside.
