It looks like Diego Carlos isn’t coming to Newcastle United.
After positive rumours yesterday about Sevilla setting their price tag, Tuesday has brought disappointment in the race to sign the 28-year-old.
The Magpies have been chasing Carlos all month, with the back and forth between Newcastle and Sevilla proving to infuriating.
It was reported on Monday night that the La Liga side had set their asking price, wanting £38million for the Brazilian. It’s a big fee, but not a million miles away from Newcastle’s previous offer of £30million.

But now Sky are reporting that the deal is on the brink of collapse. They report that Newcastle are looking elsewhere after growing ‘increasingly frustrated by Sevilla’.
That’s Newcastle’s stance, but what’s being said in Spain?
Guillem Balague provides update on Sevilla Diego Carlos stance
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has commented on the situation on Twitter, and provided information on what Sevilla are saying.
“Sevilla considers the negotiations with #NUFC have broken down about Diego Carlos. It’s over, they say,” he wrote.
This is a real blow for Newcastle, but proof they won’t be taken for a ride by clubs who try to overcharge them.
That appears to have been the case with Carlos, who the Magpies have been linked with since January 4th. Sevilla have proven to be difficult to negotiate with – unwilling to lose one of their star players midway through the season.

It felt for a while that this deal would be done. The defender even handed in a transfer request.
But instead he’ll be staying in La Liga, and Newcastle are going to have to look elsewhere for a centre-back. It’s gutting, but it’s the owners prerogative to walk away. If they had overspent on this deal, other clubs will expect them to overspend on their players too. And thus, an endless cycle begins. This is the problem with everyone knowing how rich you suddenly are.
We desperately need at least one centre-back before the window closes. Carlos would have been ideal, but it looks like this deal isn’t to be.
