The Robin Gosens to Newcastle United transfer saga is taking plenty of twists and turns.
Sky Italia reported recently that personal terms were already agreed with the player and the club, with the 27-year-old potentially quadrupling his wages if he moves to St James’ Park.
However, there is still the issue of a fee being agreed between Atalanta and Newcastle. And Fabrizio Romano claimed yesterday that the Magpies’ first offer was rejected.
While Atalanta don’t seem keen on letting one of their top players go, perhaps Gosens’ desire for the move can help us out.
Sky Italia claim that the Germany international is ‘pushing’ to join Newcastle this month. For £2.9million a year, I’d be pushing too…
The report adds that Amanda Staveley and co will make a fresh move before the end of the January window.
Newcastle face immediate competition from Inter for Robin Gosens
It was claimed last week that another club are interested in the left-back, with Inter eyeing a summer move. It highlighted the need for Newcastle to get this deal done now, despite his injury problems.
However, Romano has now stated that the Serie A leaders are keen now.
He wrote on Twitter: “Inter will insist for German left back Robin Gosens as main target for this window. Negotiation with Atalanta will take place soon – Inter want Gosens as priority.”
This could complicate matters for Newcastle, possibly for better or worse.
On the one hand, Gosens may prefer a move to Inter. They’re fighting for another Serie A title, and it will allow him to continue playing in the Champions League in the near future.
In contrast, it may encourage Atalanta to do business with Newcastle. Surely they’d rather Gosens went abroad rather than improve a domestic rival.
If we can beat Inter to his signature, it will be a real achievement. Gosens could be a great signing, and it would give us two exciting, attack-minded fullbacks.
With a deal already in place, all Newcastle have to do is agree a price with Atalanta. Simple, right? Wrong.
Romano has added that Inter are now in advanced negotiations and are now the favourites to sign Gosens. The Magpies could be about to miss out on another target, unless they make a big offer themselves…
