Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves has suggested that a big name centre-midfielder could join Newcastle United this month.

The Magpies have made two signings so far, bringing in Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood for a combined fee of £37million.

They are two experienced players who improve the squad and will hopefully be pivotal in our quest to avoid relegation.

Newcastle have made sensible signings so far, despite being linked with some big names.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

The signings are expected to continue at St James’ Park, and Graves has hinted that a ‘marquee’ name could still join the club.

What has Pete Graves said?

Speaking to the latest episode of Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast, Graves admitted that he’s heard something very exciting about Newcastle’s transfer plans.

“They want a centre-midfielder as well, and I heard – Transfer Talk exclusive here – the marquee signing was going to be a centre midfielder, so who’s that going to be,” Graves said.

He then went on to mention players such as Boubacar Kamara, Georginio Wijnaldum, Aaron Ramsey, Dele Alli and James Ward-Prowse. However, this appeared to just be speculation on his part.

Marquee centre-midfielder would be a dream

With Isaac Hayden out injured, Joe Willock out of form, Sean Longstaff in and out of the team and Jonjo Shelvey inconsistent, it’s clear Newcastle need a new centre-midfielder this month.

While the priority is currently the defence, attentions will surely turn to the middle of the park once a centre-back is secured.

And talk of a marquee arrival is tantalising. Plenty of names have been linked, like the ones mentioned by Graves on the Transfer Talk podcast. Amadou Haidara was mentioned by the Daily Mail yesterday, with talk of an £80million move.

Any of those options arriving would be sensational. Each of them would massively improve us in the engine room.

Of course, it could be someone else. Or Newcastle chance tact and go down another route. It all depends on other clubs and their willingness to do business. That’s unfortunately the way it goes in a transfer window midway through the season.

The Magpies are very unpredictable this month. No one expected Chris Wood to arrive, but most fans are happy. The only unhappy people seem to be the media and fans of other clubs.

Newcastle’s marquee midfielder could be a completely leftfield name, or there might not be a marquee midfielder signing at all.

While PIF and co have big ambitions for Newcastle, they’ve found out this month that they can’t always get what they want – Sven Botman, for example.
