Newcastle transfer news: Miguel Almiron could be sold this summer

It looks like Miguel Almiron is fighting for his Newcastle United future.

The Paraguayan was once a fan favourite at St James’ Park, but he’s really fallen out of favour. He was far from influential under Steve Bruce, while Eddie Howe has barely given him a kick.

Almiron was the talk of the Toon when he arrived in January 2019. Signed by Rafa Benitez, he became the club’s record signing at £21million.

That record has since been broken, and Miggy’s influence has waned.

Now his time at St James’ Park could be coming to an end, as Amanda Staveley and co usher in a new era for the club.

According to TEAMtalk, PIF are planning a big rebuild this summer, which means multiple Toon players could be sold – including Almiron.

The 28-year-old is named by TEAMtalk as one of seven players who could be made available for transfer. Other names mentioned are Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis, Emil Krafth, Dwight Gayle and Federico Fernandez.

Miguel Almiron transfer sadly feels inevitable

Of all the names mentioned, Almiron will probably be the most disappointing. He arrived with such promise from Atlanta United.

He was seen as a gamechanger signing and looked exactly that early on. His pace and energy helped transform Rafa Benitez’s side, and he formed an exciting front three with Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon.

But injury ended his debut season early, and by the time he returned the manager who signed him had gone.

Bruce never got the best out of Almiron, and often played him out of position. He felt like a player who would benefit from the change of manager, but that hasn’t happened.

Since Howe was appointed, Almiron has only started three Premier League games. It looks like the writing could be on the wall, and that a former club record signing could leave Newcastle this summer.

One thing is for sure – we certainly won’t get the £21million back that we paid for him.
