Newcastle transfer news: Merih Demiral open to joining Magpies amid interest

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Merih Demiral this summer.

The centre-back’s future is very much up in the air right now. He joined Atalanta on loan last summer, with the deal including an option to buy.

The Serie A side are yet to decide whether or not they will exercise that option. If they decide not to sign him, Demiral will return to Juventus who will likely sell the 24-year-old.

That could open the door for Newcastle, who are keen to sign him according to Calciomercato.

Merih Demiral interested in Newcastle move

According to Turkish outlet C2 Haber, Demiral would be open to joining Newcastle this summer. They add that he would cost around £17million.

That would be a bit of a bargain considering the asking prices that are being reported for some targets. For example, Brentford seemingly want more than £50million for Ivan Toney.

But signing an international defender for less than £20million would be quite the coup. Demiral is very highly rated, joining Juventus in 2019. He’s got plenty of experience in one of Europe’s top divisions, while he’s also played in the Champions League.

He’s played with some top players too, including Leonardo Bonucci. The Italian legend spoke about Demiral earlier this year, describing him as ‘a great person and a great professional‘.

Of course, talk of a move for Demiral is just rumour and speculation at the moment. It’s also yet to be reported by the English media.

Another centre-back on the horizon at SJP

Demiral isn’t the only centre-back Newcastle are reportedly chasing right now.

Sven Botman appears to be closing in on a move to St James’ Park. The Magpies look to be in pole position ahead of AC Milan, with a £30million fee agreed last week.

The Dutchman has been a Newcastle target for a long time. Eddie Howe really wants to bring him in, having missed out in January.

But talk of a move for Demiral shouldn’t impact our Botman chase. The latter is a left-footed defender, meaning he would play as the left-sided centre-back. In contrast, Demiral plays on the right. He would therefore compete with Fabian Schar for a place in the starting XI.

Botman feels the most likely to join between him and Demiral, but deals for both of them can’t be ruled out. That would give Howe a completely new defence to the one he inherited last year.
