Newcastle United have reportedly failed in their bid to sign Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard for the rest of the season.
News emerged yesterday that the Magpies were once again targeting Lingard, who was heavily linked shortly after the takeover.
It was claimed by the Telegraph in October that he could be one of PIF’s first signings at St James’ Park. However, the Athletic reported in December that Lingard wouldn’t be leaving Manchester United.
However, things changed on Wednesday. MEN broke the news that Newcastle were once again trying to sign Lingard, looking to land him on loan.
The noise seemed positive, with Sky Sports claiming that the 29-year-old was impressed by the Magpies’ ability to sign his friend Kieran Trippier.
Manchester United say no to Newcastle’s Lingard proposal
However, BBC Sport state that the Red Devils have turned down Newcastle’s Lingard approach.
They are reportedly reluctant to loan out the midfielder due to his contract expiring in the summer. That’s despite claims that Newcastle are willing to cover all of his wages.
It’s not like Lingard is being used by Man United either. He hasn’t started a single Premier League game all season, making nine appearances off the bench.
Now Newcastle have a decision to make. With a loan seemingly unlikely, we may need to make a permanent bid. And that will cost a lot more money, considering Lingard will be free to negotiate with whoever he wants in the summer.
But this is a transfer we have to complete. We saw against Watford how poor we are offensively, and a player like Lingard could really kick our Premier League survival mission into gear.
Whatever it takes, we need to sign Jesse Lingard.
