Newcastle transfer news: Toon remain in contact with Man United’s Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard should be a Newcastle United player right now.

That’s what everyone wanted to happen in January – except for his current club Manchester United. Toon co-owner Amanda Staveley recently stated that the England international ‘wanted to come to us’.

After plenty of speculation and multiple bids from the Magpies, the Red Devils stood firm and decided to keep Lingard at Old Trafford.

It was incredibly harsh on the midfielder. He’s barely played this season after a sensational loan spell with West Ham.

Since the January transfer window closed, Lingard has made five Manchester United appearances, starting just once.

He’s set to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season, but will Newcastle be in the race to sign him?

Newcastle still talking to Jesse Lingard

According to The i, the Magpies have remained in contact with Lingard and his representatives. They state that Newcastle could revive their interest, although that reads more like speculation from writer Mark Douglas.

If Newcastle do move for Lingard again in the summer, they will face a lot of competition. The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent, meaning he will no longer be held down by the Man United shackles.

Getting a player like Lingard for nothing is a great opportunity. That’s why he will likely have so many options – both in the Premier League and from abroad.

If Newcastle are as desperate to land Lingard in the summer as they were in the winter, they will need to put forward a really attractive offer.
