Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing free agent Christian Eriksen.

The Danish midfielder is seemingly braced for a Premier League return this month following his release from Inter Milan.

Eriksen was at the centre of Euro 2020’s most shocking moment. The Denmark international collapsed during a group game against Finland, suffering a cardiac arrest.

It was terrifying to witness on the television, and would have been infinitely more terrifying for his family, teammates and fans inside the stadium.

Eriksen was fighting for his life, but is now set for a return to professional football. The 29-year-old now has an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, but is unable to play for Inter Milan due to Italian regulations.

However, it won’t stop him from playing competitive football. Ajax’s Daley Blind is another player who has one – he was fitted with an ICD in 2019.

Newcastle to challenge Brentford for Christian Eriksen signature

According to the Athletic, Brentford have offered Eriksen a six-month contract with an option of another year. The Bees may have an edge in this race, with Eriksen previously working alongside Thomas Frank.

However, they aren’t the only Premier League side in contention. The Times have reported that both Newcastle and Leicester are keen to sign the Danish playmaker.

Eriksen would certainly be a welcome arrival at St James’ Park. He’s incredibly creative, and that’s something we desperately missed on Saturday as we struggled to breakdown a far from solid Watford side.

We were poor defensively, but we weren’t anything special going forwards on Saturday either. Despite seeing a lot of the ball, we were unable to carve out many opportunities. Ben Foster barely made a save all game.

That’s where Eriksen could fit in. He has wonderful vision, as we saw for years in the Premier League with Tottenham.

Newcastle are looking at some big names this month and have been snubbed, but Eriksen could be very attainable given Brentford’s move.

The Bees have put a contract offer on the table, and hopefully Newcastle present Eriksen with another, more lucrative option.
