Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports has reported that Newcastle United interested in signing Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims in the January transfer window. The French sriker is only 19 years old and has 8 goals and three assists in Ligue 1.

Ekitike started the season as Stade Reims fourth-choice striker, but in such a short period of time has really impressed. He’s currently their top scorer this season and is seen as one of the most promising talents in Ligue 1.

The 2021/22 campaign is Ekitike’s first full-season campaign in France, but it’s certainly a great start. Time will tell if he’s destined for greatness or just a flash in the pan.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

Of all strikers linked with Newcastle, Ekitike is one of the riskiests

There is no doubt that Ekitike is an extremely promising talent. His goal contributions this season are very strong for someone so young. However, signing him now might not be the wisest decision for Newcastle.

There have been many exciting Ligue 1 players that have come over to the Premier League and failed to make an impact. The style of play in the league differs from England’s top flight and not everyone can make the jump.

For every Yohan Cabaye you get a few Remy Cabellas or a Sylvain Marveauxs. By this, we mean a player who shows lots of promise in France, but it doesn’t translate over in England.

Ekitike is not going anywhere soon, and perhaps Newcastle should keep an eye on him and monitor the 19-year-old’s progress. Who knows maybe their paths will cross again at some point?

There are a number of of strikers that Newcastle has been linked with. With only Dwight Gayle available, you’d think two more would need to be brought in.

It would be asking too much of Ekitike to be the provider of goals for Newcastle as they look to avoid relegation. But perhaps he’s one for the future, so the Toony Army should keep an eye on him.
