Martin Dubravka is edging closer to a move from Newcastle to Manchester United.
The Slovakian has been identified as the goalkeeper who Erik ten Hag wants, while he is keen to make the move from St James’ Park to Old Trafford.
Dubravka will be joining the Red Devils on loan, with the deal including an option to make the transfer permanent. It’s not a perfect deal for Newcastle, but it’s one that makes sense.
The Magpies need to move at least one goalkeeper on, with Eddie Howe currently having four senior stoppers available.
The former Sparta Prague man is going to be the one who makes way, and a move to Manchester United is close to completion.
Romano provides the latest on Martin Dubravka to Manchester United
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has commented on Dubravka joining Man United, and stated that the 33-year-old has arrived in Manchester for a medical.
He wrote on Twitter: “Martin Dubravka has just arrived in Manchester in order to complete medical tests — been told he’ll be at Carrington this afternoon to undergo medical tests as new Manchester United player.”
Romano added that the deal is a loan with an option to buy next summer for £5million. In his words ‘it’s done’.
Dubravka served Newcastle very well
It appears that this is potentially the end of Dubravka’s Newcastle career. Even if Man United don’t make his loan deal permanent, he will surely be moved on again in the summer of 2023.
It’s a real shame to see him leave. Dubravka has been an excellent goalkeeper ever since he joined the club, despite arriving as a relatively unknown prospect.
He was signed by Rafa Benitez on loan, then the deal became permanent after half a season. He cost £4million, and it was money well spent.
This is the first season since he joined that Dubravka hasn’t been Newcastle’s first choice stopper. He’s been replaced by Nick Pope, but it was hoped that he would act as deputy.
However, that won’t be the case. Instead, he’s off to become David De Gea’s understudy, but will fancy his chances of playing in the Europa League.
It looks like Dubravka’s last competitive Newcastle appearance will be the 2-1 win over Burnley on the final day of last season.
A medical is all that stands between him joining Man United, as Newcastle prepare to say goodbye.
