Reported Newcastle United target Denis Zakaria could be available for a bargain fee this month.

The Swiss midfielder’s contract at Borussia Monchengladbach is set to expire in the summer, meaning this is the last chance for the Bundesliga side to get some cash for him.

Zakaria has been with Monchengladbach since 2017, arriving from Young Boys for a reported €10million. And the 25-year-old could apparently leave for an even smaller fee this month, rather than exiting for nothing in the summer.

According to German website Sport1, Zakaria could leave for just €6million. That equates to £5million, making him an absolute bargain for whoever gets him this month. That’s assuming someone does, of course.

But could Newcastle make a move?

Denis Zakaria previously linked with Newcastle, but deal seems tricky

Sky Sports claimed in December that Newcastle United are interested in Zakaria. The Magpies are reportedly looking for a centre-midfielder, but that search appears to have been put on hold.

The priority at the moment is securing a defender, with Chris Wood set to end Eddie Howe’s striker crisis.

But for just £5million, Newcastle need to be taking a very hard look at Zakaria. He has the midfield qualities that we’re crying out far.

Our midfield has been unbalanced for a long time. We have multiple players who have individual talents, but no one stands out as a complete midfielder.

Signing Zakaria would at least give us something close to that. He’s strong in possession, and has the athleticism required to thrive in the Premier League.

And at 25, his best years are ahead of him.

However, reported interest from elsewhere could prove to be an issue. Manchester United have been heavily linked with Zakaria recently.

While they’re a bit of a shambles right now, you’d imagine that Zakaria would be more interested in a move to Old Trafford than a relegation battle at St James’ Park.

But if he really is available for just £5million, Newcastle must enter the conversation – especially given the £80million links with Amadou Haidara.

Zakaria would be much, much cheaper and could be just as impressive in black and white.
