Newcastle United are now one of the big boys.

Not only have they been more than competitive on the pitch against the established elite of late, Newcastle are happy to mix it in the transfer market.

Sven Botman, after all, arrived at St James’ Park despite interest from AC Milan, while Arsenal were reportedly keen on Bruno Guimaraes before the Magpies swooped.

So, it is not much of a surprise to see reported Newcastle targets touted for moves elsewhere.

Indeed, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is said to be in demand.

Marc Guehi: Newcastle transfer target set to be subject of bidding war

The England international has frequently been touted as a target at St James’ Park of late.

Now, however, fresh reports have emerged.

According to the print edition of The Sun (page 64 on 29/10/2023), the defender is attracting big interest elsewhere.

It is claimed Arsenal are now ready to enter the race but are aware there is likely to be a bidding war for the player next summer.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are also said be interested and Palace are believed to be safe in the knowledge there will be huge offers for the 23-year-old at the end of the season.

Marc Guehi: Newcastle might have to sit this one out

Despite PIF’s many millions, bidding wars don’t appear to be something Newcastle are prepared to be involved in.

When a deal gets too expensive for them, they are happy to walk away. Both Jesse Lingard and Diego Carlos can attest to that.

With that in mind – and considering FFP limitations – it’s hard to see how the club would be prepared to go up against other monied teams in a huge transfer battle.

If they do not believe they can get value for money, Newcastle have previous in stepping back.
