Newcastle United tried to sign Christian Pulisic during the summer, but now he’s set for a fresh chance at Chelsea.

The USA international was not happy under Thomas Tuchel, with the German resisting temptation to put Pulisic in his starting XI. That led to speculation that he could leave Stamford Bridge.

But a big change at Chelsea means Pulisic could be set for a second chance. Tuchel has now been sacked, and replaced by Graham Potter.

The former Brighton boss will take charge of his first Premier League game as Chelsea manager this weekend. And there’s a possibility that Pulisic could be involved.

According to 90min, the 24-year-old is set to get a chance to prove himself to the new manager. Potter will give Pulisic the opportunity to force his way into the side before making a definitive decision regarding his future.

That means Newcastle’s hopes of signing the American could be in serious jeopardy.

The Magpies were hoping to loan one player from Chelsea during the transfer window. They were interested in Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Pulisic.

Any one of those four would have been a good addition. But Pulisic would have been the pick of the bunch. He’s the type of player Newcastle are crying out for right now, and his reputation in America could have boosted our profile across the pond.

In fact, Eddie Howe’s side were ‘obsessed‘ with signing him. That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who says that Pulisic didn’t join Newcastle because their loan offer didn’t include an obligation to buy.

Now Newcastle’s chance to sign Pulisic might have passed them by. If he impresses Potter in the coming weeks then there is surely no chance that he will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

That will disappoint the Toon hierarchy, who are keen to add a wide forward to Howe’s squad in January. Newcastle need more creativity in attack, and Pulisic would have brought that. However, his fresh chance at Chelsea could ruin the Magpies’ American dream.
