Newcastle United-linked Christian Eriksen has reportedly agreed to join Brentford.

The Danish star is a free agent after being released by Inter Milan last year.

After collapsing in a game and suffering a cardiac arrest against Finland at Euro 2020, Eriksen was fighting for his life. But he is now set to return to football after having an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) fitted. However, Italian regulations state he cannot play in Serie A with it.

That’s why he is searching for a new club. It was claimed at the start of last week that he was on the brink of a Premier League return.

The Athletic stated that Brentford had offered him a deal, but Newcastle and Leicester were also linked by the Times.

At the time, we speculated what a brilliant signing he’d be for the Magpies, coming into a midfield that is desperate for the kind of creativity and vision that he possesses.

Sadly, it looks like Eriksen will be playing against Newcastle soon rather than for them.

Only a medical stands between Brentford and Christian Eriksen

According to the Athletic, the 29-year-old has agreed to join Thomas Frank’s side on a deal until the end of the season. He will also have the option of another year.

The report states that only a medical stands between Eriksen joining Brentford. The midfielder was keen on a return to London, which always put Newcastle at a huge disadvantage. He also worked with Frank previously, making Brentford and Eriksen something of a perfect match.

It’s disappointing, as he would have been a great signing for Newcastle. And it would have been a privilege to see him making his comeback in a black and white shirt.

But regardless, it’s just fantastic to hopefully see Eriksen back playing, no matter which club it’s for.

The Athletic state that Eriksen likely won’t be ready to make his Bees debut on February 5th in the FA Cup.

However, you’d like to think he’d be ready in time to feature when Newcastle head to West London later that month.

Eddie Howe’s side take on Brentford on February 26th, and could see firsthand what they missed out on with Eriksen.
