Newcastle transfer news: Burnley won’t sell Chris Wood

It doesn’t sound like Newcastle United will have any joy in their pursuit of Chris Wood.

During the Magpies’ shock cup exit to Cambridge United, it became very clear we need a striker. The need was then increased when Eddie Howe confirmed that Callum Wilson will be out for eight weeks.

Reports on Sunday claimed that Newcastle are eyeing a deal for Burnley’s number nine. The Telegraph reported that Newcastle want to sign Wood this week, and that the New Zealand international is interested in a move to St James’ Park.

Considering we put so many aimless crosses into the box on Saturday, signing someone like Wood would be ideal.

However, it looks like this is a transfer target that is going nowhere.

Newcastle denied chance to sign Chris Wood

According to Newcastle World, Burnley will reject any move for Wood. They do not want to sell their main source of goals – especially to a direct relegation rival.

Sean Dyche’s side are above Newcastle in the table, but only by goal difference. They too are in a perilous position, fighting for their Premier League lives.

Therefore, you can understand why they wouldn’t want to sell Wood to us. They’d be making us stronger, and them weaker. From a Burnley perspective, letting the 30-year-old move to St James’ Park could condemn them to relegation.

He’s a player who would be very welcome at Newcastle. Wood is a proven goalscorer at this level, hitting double figures for four seasons in a row.

But for the same reason they don’t want to sell James Tarkowski to us, Chris Wood is another unrealistic target who we won’t be able to sign given our position in the table.
