Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Boubacar Kamara during the summer transfer window.

The Frenchman was heavily linked with the Magpies, as Steve Bruce looked to boost his midfield options. Kamara was an ideal candidate due to his versatility. He can also play at centre-back, another problem position for Newcastle.

However, a move to St James’ Park failed to materialise. In fact, Kamara reportedly rejected both Newcastle and Wolves on transfer deadline day.

A deal looked possible amid his contract situation, but that wasn’t the case. However, Kamara’s contract situation remains unresolved. And it now looks like he will be available for absolutely nothing in the summer of 2022.

Boubacar Kamara could be available on free transfer

According to the Athletic, the 22-year-old will not extend his contract with Marseille. Instead, he plans to leave the Ligue 1 side for free next summer.

The report also adds that Newcastle have remained in contact with Kamara since the Saudi-backed takeover went through.

That should make a move to the North East more enticing for one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders.

However, a deal for Newcastle could be difficult. That’s because the Athletic add that Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester United are keeping an eye on Kamara.

Despite our riches, we can’t compete with those clubs right now.

But it might depend on how much football can be offered to Kamara. If Newcastle can survive in the top flight, they might be in a better position to give Kamara guaranteed first-team football compared to Europe’s elite.

However, the calibre of interested parties and the status of his contract means it might be extremely difficult for the Magpies to sign Kamara. There’s every chance he could reject us two summers in a row.
