Fabian Schar’s Newcastle United future is very unclear.

The defender could’ve left on a free last summer, but a one-year contract extension was triggered. His deal now expires this summer, meaning the Magpies could lose a consistent starter for absolutely nothing in the coming months.

And there are multiple European clubs reportedly interested in Schar. That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state that Napoli, AC Milan, Sevilla and Valencia are keen. They add that some Premier League clubs are also keeping an eye on his situation.

Sevilla’s interest is certainly interesting, as we tried incredibly hard to take Diego Carlos from them during the January transfer window. Are they anticipating a fresh move for the defender and lining up a replacement?

Fabian Schar is key for Newcastle once again

Losing Schar is currently unthinkable. He’s been fantastic in recent weeks, playing an important role in the wins over Leeds, Everton and Aston Villa.

He’s been a mainstay in the side since Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce. The Switzerland international has started every game possible bar one – sitting on the bench for the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Prior to Howe’s appointment, Schar had only made two appearances.

But he’s back in the fold now, and looking very settled in a back four. That’s surprising, considering how much he’s struggled in the past in a centre-back pair. He always looked more suited to a back five.

In the short term, Schar will be looking to continue his impressive form. Long term, he’ll be keen to resolve his future beyond this summer sooner rather than later.
