While there is a long way to go before the end of the season, the transfer rumour mill never stops churning.

Newcastle United are expected to be busy this summer no matter which particular European competition they are playing in.

Clearly, the Champions League is where the money lies. Entry into Europe’s elite competition makes Newcastle a much more attraction destination to go to leading players around the continent.

A major target on that front appears to be Barcelona winger Raphinha.

The Brazil international, a teammate of Bruno Guimaraes for the Selecao, continues to be linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Now, there has been a further development.

Newcastle United make approach for Raphinha

According to Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness), the club have launched a fresh approach for the winger.

They claim the Magpies and Chelsea are both looking to open formal talks with Barca imminently and the Catalan giants are looking for as much as £69.8m.

For their part, Barca are reportedly hoping for a bidding war between two major English clubs as they look to drive up the fee.

Still, no negotiations will take place until Xavi’s side have sealed the La Liga title.

Raphinha would be a major upgrade

Though Miguel Almiron has enjoyed a fantastic campaign and Jacob Murphy has been a key supporting player, Raphinha would have to be seen as a major upgrade.

Hailed as a “magic” player during his time with Leeds, the 26-year-old has registered 21 goal involvements across 46 appearances this season. They simply aren’t numbers anyone in the Newcastle squad can yet match and Raphinha is already experienced to life in the Premier League.

If they can reunite Guimaraes with him at St James’ Park, Newcastle’s recruitment staff will have done very well indeed.
