According to Sky Sports, Manchester United want Newcastle target Axel Tuanzebe to sign a new contract before leaving the club on loan.
Steve Bruce is desperate to add a centre back to his squad this summer, and Tuanzebe looks to be the favourite right now.
The Telegraph reported on Monday that the Magpies are trying to sign the 23-year-old. They even suggested he could be our first signing of the summer.
Manchester United are on the brink of signing a new centre-back, with Raphael Varane reportedly on his way from Real Madrid.
That should open the door for Tuanzebe to leave Old Trafford on loan, but not until he signs a new contract.
The defender’s current deal expires next summer, although Manchester United do have the option of extending it for another 12 months.

The Telegraph claimed that a loan deal and a permanent move had been discussed for Tuanzebe. However, a loan is more likely because of Newcastle’s finances.
And with Sky Sports stating that the Red Devils want him to sign a new deal, seemingly a permanent move is no longer an option.
If Tuanzebe does leave on loan, it makes sense from Manchester United’s perspective to give him a new contract, simply to protect his value.
However, it may make signing Tuanzebe permanently much tougher in the future.
A loan with an option to buy would be much more beneficial for Newcastle, as it would mean the price is fixed no matter how well he performs.
Of course, a move to St James’ Park still isn’t guaranteed. Transfers are never easy for the Magpies, and we’ve already missed out on multiple major targets this summer.
Here’s hoping Tuanzebe doesn’t join an already lengthy list. Even on loan he would be a great signing.
