Newcastle target Phil Jones impresses on Manchester United return

Reported Newcastle United target Phil Jones started a competitive game for the first time in almost two years on Monday night.

Manchester United took on Wolves in the final Christmas fixture, and Jones was a shock inclusion in the starting XI.

The former England international had completely fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, with injury problems adding to his list of woes.

But with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly all missing, Jones was thrust back into the spotlight by interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

It was his first senior start since an FA Cup tie with Tranmere Rovers on January 26th 202 – 708 days ago.

Phil Jones shines as Man United falter

Having struggled against Newcastle, it was no surprise to see Man United have the same issues at home to Wolves. Bruno Lage’s side were better in every department, with Joao Moutinho netting an 82nd minute winner.

A change in manager hasn’t led to a change in fortunes for Man United, who continue to look ponderous despite their wealth of world class talent.

But while his teammates disappointed, Jones’ comeback was impressive. He was commanding at the back, winning headers and providing vital blocks.

It was his defensive header that led to the Wolves winner, but it’s hard to blame the 29-year-old. Man United’s problems were and are far bigger than Jones not clearing the ball far enough.

Jones’ performance certainly caught Rio Ferdinand’s eye. The ex-defender said on his YouTube channel: “For someone to come in from the cold like that, you have to tip your hat to someone like that.”

Ferdinand went on to add: “Albeit, his header was the one that fell to Moutinho’s foot before he scored but I thought he was class for long periods in the game.”

Rangnick praised Jones too, saying: “I think he did well, not having played for two years at this kind of level. We didn’t see that [effects of the absence] in the game. He did his job and did exactly what I expected him to do.”

Is Jones what Newcastle need?

The Sun reported in November that Newcastle were one of 13 clubs interested in signing Jones in January. However, his name hasn’t been mentioned as much since Eddie Howe was appointed, with other players such as Sven Botman and Lloyd Kelly being linked.

Jones has been rumoured to be a Newcastle target in the past, particularly during the Steve Bruce era. However, a deal was never done.

But could that change in January? Newcastle desperately need centre-backs, and you can imagine Jones wants to leave Old Trafford to play more regularly.

While the Magpies are being linked with some big names, Jones’ performance against Wolves was certainly a reminder of what he is capable of. He’s far from finished.

Newcastle will likely look at other options first, but Jones certainly wouldn’t be a bad option if we fail to secure our top defensive targets.
