Reported Newcastle target Axel Tuanzebe played the full 90 minutes for Manchester United in a pre-season friendly Tuesday night.

The centre-back is heavily linked with a loan move to St James’ Park.

The Telegraph claimed on Monday that Tuanzebe could be the Magpies’ first signing of the summer.

On Tuesday, Sky Sports stated that the 23-year-old can leave on loan, but only if he signs a new contract with the Red Devils.

And on Wednesday, the Chronicle reported that Tuanzebe’s camp are delighted by Newcastle’s interest, with Steve Bruce’s side in pole position.

Later that day, the gossip stopped, and Tuanzebe actually had to play some football.

Manchester United continued their preparation for the new season with a 2-2 draw at home to Brentford.

Tuanzebe started and finished the game, playing at centre-back alongside Tedan Mengi.

It’s good to see him getting some match fitness ahead of the possibility of joining Newcastle.

One thing he will need to get used to his playing in a back three. Tuanzebe was part of a centre-back pairing on Wednesday night, while the Magpies seem destined to start the season with three central defenders.

While it is just pre-season, some Manchester United fans weren’t impressed with Tuanzebe’s performance. Some even suggested that it is time for him to leave.

He’s more than welcome at St James’ Park. We need any help we can get right now.
